In the 855 square miles of Van Zandt County in Northeast Texas just an hour east of Dallas you'll find lakes, prairies and the piney woods; rolling hills and farming fields; wildflowers and forests of oak, pecan and elm trees inhabited by white-tailed deer, bobcats, coyotes and red and gray fox.

With major lakes within minutes of each corner of the county there are numerous fishing and boating opportunities.

Three award-winning golf courses also provide many hours of fun and entertainment.

Rustic country cabins and charming bed and breakfasts provide rewarding getaways with peaceful scenery, nature trails, birdwatching, hiking and backroads bicycle rides.

Weather and terrain conditions in Van Zandt County have made it home to many exotic wildlife including zebras, red deer, antelopes, elephants, giraffes, llamas, and more.

As a ranching and farming community for more than 150 years you'll see cowboys and longhorns and rodeos to entertain and delight. Working farms produce livestock, corn, sweet potatoes, blueberries, dairy products, and cotton.

Two of the biggest resources in the county are salt and oil and local museums take you through their history and present day production.

You'll find small towns with rich history and folks who've taken great care to keep it alive. You can stand at the site of the last war battle between Texas Military and Cherokee Indians where Chief Bowles died. You'll hear stories of the people who settled this area, where they came from and what they brought with them--their music, folklore, customs and beliefs. You'll step back in time and experience what life was like more than 100 years ago with a rich and unique heritage.

Van Zandt County provides numerous opportunities for shopping including the phenomenal experience that happens each month at First Monday Trade Days in Canton. Every Thursday through Sunday before the first Monday of each month an estimated 250,000 visitors roll into town. Visitors also enjoy shopping on the downtown Canton Square which is a Texas Main Street city offering antiques, gift shops and restaurants in historic buildings. Canton is the county seat of Van Zandt County often called the Free State of Van Zandt by historical accounts. Another unique shopping experience is in the quiet country charm of Edom with numerous unusual gift shops and artists.

Around the county you'll see one of the most sought after historical villages in the country in Edgewood and a unique artists community in Edom. In Grand Saline is the only building in the world made of salt, a tribute to the salt mine the city sits on. The mining operations reach a depth of 700 feet and extend over a 60 acre area. The salt found here can supply the world's craving for the next 20,000 years. Grand Saline is also the birthplace of famous aviator Wiley Post. In Van you'll hear about the community's boom town days at the Van Oil and Historical Museum and see wells still in operation. You'll find the community of Wills Point in the Northwest corner of the county. Not only is Wills Point the Bluebird Capital of Texas and the Gateway to Lake Tawakoni but charming brick-lined streets, well-preserved historic buildings, a variety of shops and thriving businesses, and a rich history invite visitors to experience a Texas small town that knows how to hold on to its roots while spreading its wings to fly.

Delicious home cooking, Texas barbecue and old-fashioned hamburgers and malt shakes are found at numerous restaurants and cafes throughout the county.

Each small town and many rural areas of the county have their own unique gifts to share that can't be found anywhere else in the world. Discover the authentic experience of Van Zandt County.
